Forget Corona – put a little va-voom in your Cinco with a spicy Australian shiraz fit for your favorite luchador. What can I say – I went to Cost Plus looking for a patio chair and I came out with a bottle of R Wines 2007 Luchador shiraz. Yes, I’ll admit the label made me do it, but since I’m a huge shiraz fan, I figured I couldn’t go wrong at $6.99.
This one does not disappoint. Peppery, but not obnoxiously so, like a posse of tiny luchadores gently popping you in the tastebuds. A voluptuous blackberry nose in this medium-weight, deep purple shiraz evolves into a pleasant spice and finishes with hints of chocolate and ripe fruit. After letting it sit for a while, the fruit aromas definitely evolved.
The verdict: A winner on all counts, and a funky homage to a beloved bit of Mexican kitsch. The night is still young, chicas, so get thee to a Cost Plus and make a saucy splash at the Cinco de Mayo fiesta.
